In an era of clutter and chaos, August Sandgren provides unique handcrafted storage objects for all your small piles of clutter. It is a modern company built on old traditions, carving its way in a world marked by our constant quest for progress; a quest, which puts our planet and its inhabitants under increased pressure. More often than not, we lose valued traditions in the process. Some, fortunately, lay dormant until rediscovered; transferred to our modern-day mindset to prove the idea that old crafts still hold value and might even teach us a thing or two about quality and sustainability. August Sandgren is one such tradition, adapted to suit the modern lifestyle.

A HERITAGE BRAND UPDATED TO DE-CLUTTER THE MODERN HOME, OFFICE AND MIND

Clutter is rarely about the things. It is about the small decisions we have not yet made about them. A pile of receipts is a tax return we are avoiding. A drawer of cables is a question about which of them still works. The objects on a desk at the end of a long day are usually a map of the thoughts that did not quite get finished.

What we do is small. We make boxes, covers, and holders. But the work behind it is bigger than that. We believe the home, the office, and the mind are not three separate places. They are the same surface seen from three angles, and what sits on each of them shapes how we think on the other two. A clear desk is a clearer hour. A jewellery box that opens easily is one less small frustration to carry. A box for letters worth keeping is a quiet decision that they are, in fact, worth keeping.

We are not interested in minimalism for its own sake. We are interested in the things you choose to keep, and in giving them a place that honours that choice. The opposite of clutter is not emptiness. It is care.

ELEGANT MODERN STORAGE SOLUTIONS

The company was revived when the legacy of August Sandgren was rediscovered. His impeccable work as a bookbinder and box-maker, once supplier to the Danish court, was re-imagined for today. The original patterns, materials and tools were still there, alongside the values and craftsmanship that built the first workshop in 1920.

In its modern-day vision, shaped by founder Pia Kirkeskov Andersen, August Sandgren designs and handcrafts storage objects for everything physical we hold onto. In a world that has moved its memories to the cloud, we tend to forget the things we can still touch, and the clutter they quietly create.

We make objects for people who care about the order of their surroundings, and about how that order looks. Storage that belongs in a modern home, not hidden away from it. Beautiful enough to leave out, considered enough to last a lifetime.

A LEGACY OF BOOKBINDING AND BOX-MAKING

August Sandgren lived only forty-one years (1893–1934), but he packed them with curiosity, passion, and the conviction to do things right. He was never too proud to learn from others, and his way of working was so far ahead of its time it still feels ahead of ours.

As the preeminent bookbinder and box-maker of his era, he was renowned for quality, timelessness and functionality. Today he is recognised as one of the founders of Danish functionalism, alongside Kaare Klint, Arne Jacobsen and Hans J. Wegner, and exhibited at Design Museum Denmark.

His original creations are still sought after today, almost a century later. Proof, quietly, that an August Sandgren object is made to last more than a lifetime.

ELEVATING THE USE OF SURPLUS MATERIALS
Our materials are surplus from the European furniture and fashion industry. Offcuts from houses we admire, rescued before they go to waste. Sourcing this way gives us access to leathers and fabrics of a quality far higher than we could otherwise buy, and a design philosophy of longevity that only deepens with time. The patina makes them more beautiful, not less. In this way, August Sandgren is a quiet promise to the planet.
PERFECTLY IMPERFECT
Every object is handcrafted by a fourth-generation European family workshop. Combined with surplus materials and our ambition to use the whole hide, this means each piece is genuinely one of a kind: small natural marks, faint scratches, the soft irregularities of a human hand.
You will most likely never notice. But if you look for them, they are there — and once you see them, they become the part you love most. Signs of a more natural, more honest way of making things.

STRONG LEADERSHIP
Modern-day August Sandgren is led by founder Pia Kirkeskov Andersen, who left a career at McKinsey to run a workshop. She built the company on four values that haven't changed since: respect, loyalty, collaboration, longevity. The people around her share them. Everything we do is a team effort, and every day we look for a better way to do it.
MEANINGFUL PARTNERSHIPS
The original Sandgren perfected his craft by travelling Europe, working alongside other artisans. We carry that instinct forward. We choose partners who are exceptional at what they do, and whom we genuinely like. The frame is ours, a box, and together we fill it out. The same four values that guide us internally guide who we work with: respect, loyalty, collaboration, longevity.
PEACE OF MIND
Essentially, we make mess pretty. We bring harmony to the small things that carry value but tend to either get lost or pile up into little islands of clutter. In a chaotic world, quiet and considered objects let the mind rest. Only then can we focus on what actually matters.
